Every party needs its superheroes

Het is een droomscenario: je zit in een band met een groepje vrienden en je reist door stad en land om te spelen op festivals, tentfeesten en in concertzalen. Een paar van je andere vrienden hebben ook een band, en hoewel het genre dat ze spelen compleet anders is dan dat van jouw band, zij doen het ook best goed. Ze spelen niet op tentfeesten, maar ze hebben wel op Pinkpop gestaan en ze zijn bezig met een clubtour. Dan denk je: hoe leuk zou het zijn om samen een show te spelen? Die show, dat is de Homecoming XL show van Daredevils met The Overslept. 

Ik volg Daredevils al sinds ze in 2016 speelden op het tentfeest in mijn dorp, en ben naar al hun Homecoming shows geweest. Die shows vinden plaats in poppodium De Vorstin in Hilversum en zijn bedoeld om het jaar af te sluiten en alvast een tipje van de sluier te geven van de set die ze het volgende jaar gaan spelen. Dit jaar hebben Daredevils uitgepakt en besloten om met hun vrienden van The Overslept de Homecoming show te doen – een band die ik ook heel leuk vind, dus ik stond te springen toen ik in juni (!) al de kaarten kocht. 

De show begon met een optreden van The Overslept, dat ongeveer een uur duurde. De nummers die ze speelden waren dezelfde als tijdens hun clubtour, waardoor het voor mij, die ze dit jaar op drie festivals en bij één show van hun clubtour live gezien heeft, makkelijk was om te vergelijken met eerdere optredens. Ik zeg dit zo objectief mogelijk: de band is wéér beter geworden. Sowieso is er altijd al weinig op de instrumentatie aan te merken, maar frontman Sem maakt af en toe nog wel eens een foutje. Gisteravond heb ik echter geen fout kunnen opmerken, wat misschien te danken is aan het feit dat een groot deel van het publiek bestond uit vrienden en familie. Er zat één verrassing in de set van The Overslept: bij het nummer Forgive Me werd Bjørgen van Essen, de frontman van Daredevils, het podium op geroepen. Bjørgen heeft op de studioversie van dit nummer ook meegezongen, dus stiekem had ik dat wel verwacht, maar ik had niet verwacht dat hij me zo zou wegblazen. Na Daredevils een jaar niet meer gezien te hebben was ik vergeten hoeveel energie Bjørgen heeft op het podium en hoe krachtig zijn stem is.

Toen The Overslept klaar was met spelen en het podium weer af- en opgebouwd was, begonnen Daredevils met hun set. Voor degenen die deze band niet kennen: Daredevils zijn niet zomaar een band. Ze zijn een partyband, die geen covers speelt, maar mashups van de meest bekende stukjes van allerlei nummers. Van Nirvana tot De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, van ABBA naar André Hazes, je kunt het zo gek niet verzinnen of ze spelen het, en jij zingt ze allemaal mee. In voorgaande jaren hadden Daredevils veel hip-hop in hun set gestopt, waar ik niet erg fan van ben, en hoewel dat ook wel weer in deze set zat, was het niet overheersend. Het voelde weer als een goede mix van allerlei genres, voor ieder wat wils. 

Helaas waren er wat technische problemen toen Daredevils aan het spelen waren, de meest opvallende daarvan was dat Bjørgens microfoon stopte met werken en hij een half nummer moest zingen door de microfoon van één van de backing vocals. De sfeer op het podium verandert daardoor helemaal, en vooral aan het gezicht van de zanger kon je heel goed aflezen dat hij ervan baalde. Desondanks zong hij de sterren van de hemel en klonk hij een stuk netter dan voorheen. Bjørgen houdt er nogal van om af en toe te schreeuwen – wat ik waardeer – en dat deed hij ook gisteravond, maar dat deed hij niet omdat hij de noten niet kon halen, wat voorheen soms wel het geval was. Hij klonk gecontroleerder dan normaal. 

Bij Daredevils spat het enthousiasme er altijd vanaf, niet alleen bij Bjørgen, maar ook bij gitarist Jochem Winterwerp, gitarist David Sazias, toetsenist Jarno de Vries, drummer Maikel Roethof en bassist Dirkjan van Oord, van wie we gisteravond afscheid hebben genomen. Het is altijd jammer om afscheid te moeten nemen van een bandlid, maar dit afscheid was – met een stagedive – meer dan waardig. Zijn plaats wordt ingenomen door Arthur Stoker, die tijdens het laatste (of eigenlijk het op één na laatste) nummer van het set liet zien wat hij in zijn mars had. Persoonlijk heb ik er wel vertrouwen in dat het goed komt met hem in de band. 

Na al dat enthousiasme zat ik in de auto onderweg naar huis, met zwarte strepen op mijn wangen, nog vol energie, nummers van The Overslept mee te zingen en merkte ik dat er nog weinig van mijn stem over was. Als een show dat met je doet, dan weet je dat je goed zit. Tot volgend jaar, jongens!

Every Party needs its Superheroes

It’s the perfect scenario: you’re in a band with a couple of friends and you travel across the country to play at festivals, parties and clubs. Some of your other friends also have a band, and although their genre is totally different than yours, they’re also doing quite well. They don’t play parties, but they did play at Pinkpop (one of The Netherlands’ biggest festivals) and are doing a tour. Then you think to yourself: how cool would it be to play a show together? That show, that’s the Homecoming XL show of Daredevils with The Overslept.

I’ve been following Daredevils ever since they played at a party in my town in 2016, and have been to all of their homecoming shows. Those shows take place at De Vorstin in Hilversum and are meant to end the year with a bang and tip off some of the set they will play the following year. This year they really went out of their way and decided to play the Homecoming show with their friends The Overslept – a band I happen to like very much as well, so I was beyond excited when I bought my tickets back in June (!).

The show started with The Overslept’s performance, which lasted about an hour. The songs they played were the same ones they played during their club tour, which made it easy for me to compare this show to their previous performances, having seen them four times this year already. I’m saying this in the most objective way I can: this band got better once again. There usually isn’t much to complain about their instrumental skills to begin with, but frontman Sem Jonkhout does tend to make a little mistake here and there. Last night, however, I couldn’t detect any mistakes, perhaps thanks to the fact that most of the audience consisted of friends and family of the band. The set held one big surprise: during the song ‘Forgive Me’ Bjørgen van Essen, Daredevils’ frontman, got called on stage. Bjørgen also sang on the recorded version of this song, so I kind of suspected this would happen already, but I did not suspect that he would blow me away like this. After a whole year without seeing Daredevils live, I almost forgot how much energy he has on stage and how powerful of a voice he has.

When The Overslept had finished playing and the stage was all prepared, Daredevils started playing their set. A quick explanation for those who don’t know this band: Daredevils aren’t just any band. They are a party band, that doesn’t just play covers, but mashups of the most popular bits of all sorts of songs. From Nirvana to Van Halen, from ABBA to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, you name it, they will  probably play it, and you will probably sing along. In previous years the Daredevils set was jam-packed with all sorts of hip-hop, which I’m not a fan of, and there certainly was some in the set they played tonight, but it wasn’t overwhelming. It felt like a proper mix of genres again, something for everyone.

Unfortunately there were some technical issues when Daredevils were playing, the most obvious one being the fact that Bjørgen’s microphone stopped working and he was forced to sing half a song through the mic of one of the guys who sang backing vocals. This changed the ambiance on stage massively, and you could tell from the singer’s face especially that he was bummed out. He sang beautifully nonetheless and sounded a lot neater than usual. Bjørgen does tend to scream from time to time – which I can enjoy – and he also did that last night, but not because he couldn’t reach the high notes, which he did use to do. He sounded more in control than usual.

Daredevils are always super enthusiastic on stage, not just Bjørgen, but also guitarist Jochem Winterwerp, guitarist David Sazias, keyboardist Jarno de Vries, drummer Maikel Roethof and bassist Dirkjan van Oord, who played his last show as an official band member last night. It’s always sad to say goodbye, but this was the perfect goodbye, including a stage dive. Arthur Stoker will replace him, and showed us what he got during the second last song last night. I personally have a feeling he will do just fine in this band.

After all this enthusiasm I sat in the car on my way home, with black war paint on my face still, full of energy, singing along to The Overslept’s songs when I realised I had only a fraction of my voice left. If a show does that to you, you know it was good. Until next year, guys!
