Freddie Mercury is terug?

Op de website van poppodium VERA staat een indrukwekkend lijstje namen opgesomd: onder andere U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Weezer, The White Stripes, Editors, Franz Ferdinand en Nothing But Thieves hebben hier in hun vroegere jaren gespeeld. Als we daar een conclusie uit mogen trekken, heeft YUNGBLUD een succesvolle toekomst voor de boeg. Hij speelde daar namelijk gisteravond, 12 januari, op het hoofdpodium.

Dominic Harrison – hij is YUNGBLUD – zou zelf graag in het straatje van U2 en Nirvana willen passen, maar er is één fundamenteel verschil: waar Bono en Kurt Cobain de wereld toespreken, spreekt Harrison vooral de jeugd aan. En met jeugd bedoel ik voornamelijk meisjes van een jaar of zestien. Dat is jammer, want hij heeft echt wat te vertellen. Hij zingt over aanranding, over mentale gezondheid en over politiek. Hij heeft een nummer dat ‘King Charles’ heet – zegt dat niet genoeg? Maar de blonde paardenstaarten die in mijn gezicht sloegen terwijl ik van het concert probeerde te genieten leidden wel een beetje af.

Dat neemt niet weg dat Harrison een geboren entertainer is. Hij marcheert over het podium alsof hij hem eigenhandig gebouwd heeft en draagt een lach van oor tot oor op zijn gezicht als het publiek eindeloos juicht na zijn opvoering van het nummer Polygraph Eyes. Hij kust zijn gitarist, kust zijn fans, houdt zijn microfoon voor zijn kruis en tovert op een gegeven moment een regenboogvlag uit het publiek om daar vervolgens mee rond te paraderen. Als het om entertainment gaat, is Dominic Harrison misschien wel de nieuwe Freddie Mercury. Als het om de zang gaat is hij dat zeker niet, maar daar staat YUNGBLUD ook niet bekend om. Hij staat bekend om zijn rauwe stem, en daarom was ik extra verbaasd toen ik merkte dat hij over een band heen aan het zingen was. Niet de hele tijd, en soms deed hij adlibs over de band, die de normale melodie aanhield, heen, maar af en toe stopte zijn mond met zingen en klonk zijn stem toch door. Dat was niet nodig, hoor, Dominic, want de gillende meisjes vooraan hadden de tekst toch wel voor je gezongen.

Tijdens dit optreden heeft YUNGBLUD ook een tipje van de sluier gegeven van al het nieuws dat er gaat komen in het nieuwe jaar. Hij heeft wel twee nummers gespeeld die hij nog niet heeft uitgebracht, waarvan er één deze donderdag al uitkomt. Ik weet niet hoe het met jou zit, maar ik kan niet wachten.

Twenty-bi-teen is off to a good start.

Freddy Mercury is back??

On VERA’s website there is listed an impresssive number of names: U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Weezer, The White Stripes, Editors, Franz Ferdinand and Nothing But Thieves have played shows here in their earlier years. If we can draw any conclusions from that, YUNGBLUD can count on success. He played there last night, January 12th, on the main stage.

Dominic Harrison – he is YUNGBLUD – would like to be among the likes of U2 and Nirvana, but there’s one fundamental difference: where Bono and Kurt Cobain appeal to the world, Harrison mostly appeals to the youth only. Youth meaning sixteen year old girls. I regret that, because he does have something to say. He sings about sexual abuse, mental health and politics. He has a song called ‘King Charles’ – doesn’t that tell you enough? But the blonde ponytails that slapped me in the face while I was trying to enjoy the concert did distract a bit.

Harrison is a true entertainer, however. He marches across the stage as if he built it himself and wears a smile from ear to ear when the audience cheers at him endlessly after his performance of ‘Polygraph Eyes’. He kisses his guitarist, kisses his fans, holds up his microphone in front of his crotch and suddenly grabs a rainbow flag from out of the audience, subsequently prancing around with it. Entertainment-wise, Dominic Harrison might be the new Freddy Mercury. Voice-wise, he is not, but that isn’t what he’s known for. He’s known for his raw voice, thus it surprised me when I noticed that he was backed up with prerecorded vocals. Not all the time, and he did adlibs from time to time, but sometimes his mouth stopped moving and his voice kept going on. (Talented as he is, I do not believe Harrison has mastered the art of ventriloquism.) That wasn’t necessary, Dominic, because the screaming girls at the front would have sang the lyrics for you nonetheless.

During this performance, YUNGBLUD also gave us a small hint of what is to come in the new year. He generously played two new, unreleased, songs, of which one will be released this Thursday. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait.
