Januari is meestal een wat rustige maand als het gaat om albumreleases, maar er was wel een release en wat voor één: op 10 januari bracht Georgia haar tweede album uit, getiteld Seeking Thrills. Een plaat die klinkt als de toekomst.

Ik heb radio-DJ’s en recensenten deze plaat horen beschrijven als ‘Robyn-achtig’ en ik snap de vergelijking met de zangeres die je kunt kennen van ‘Dancing On My Own’ en ‘With Every Heartbeat’ wel, maar dat is niet alles wat deze plaat te bieden heeft. Er staan bijvoorbeeld hele gave samenwerkingen op, waarin ze laat zien hoe goed ze zich kan vormen naar anderen. Luister bijvoorbeeld eens naar Mellow, een track samen met Shygirl, die duistere hiphop maakt met hele snelle raps. Dat is niet de muziek die Georgia normaal gesproken maakt, maar die stijl komt wel heel erg naar voren op deze track. Het is natuurlijk ook niet zo gek dat Georgia zo goed samenwerkt met anderen om ervoor te zorgen dat ze iets maakt dat voor zowel haar als de desbetreffende artiest werkt, want ze heeft lang gedrumd voor anderen, zoals Kate Tempest.

Georgia heeft echter ook een heel eigen geluid en op dit album staan een paar hitjes die onmiskenbaar van haar zijn, en die je ongetwijfeld wel eens op de radio voorbij hebt horen komen. Vooral Never Let You Go en About Work The Dancefloor zijn absolute knallers. Die twee tracks, samen met een andere single Started Out openen samen het album en werken als een stel proppers – en nu je hier toch bent, kun je net zo goed even blijven. Oké, ja, ‘Never Let You Go’ klinkt wel een beetje als een Robyn-nummer, maar ‘About Work The Dancefloor’ heeft iets donkers in het refrein dat Robyn nooit zou doen. Deze track heeft heldere coupletten, met synthesizers die je meteen in beweging zetten, en dan dat refrein dat dit nummer iets alternatiefs geeft wat haar onderscheidt van de rest.

Nadat alle singles van de afgelopen paar jaar de revue zijn gepasseerd – 24 Hours en Mellow zijn ook al eens als single uitgebracht – komen we eindelijk aan de albumtracks toe. Die albumtracks doen niets af aan de singles. Feel It is bijvoorbeeldeen hele fijne, omdat de vocalen zo lekker ‘distorted’ zijn, dat wat gezongen wordt net tegen het randje van vals aan zit en er zo fijn in gegild wordt. ‘Feel It’ is zo’n nummer dat zowel pop als alternatief klinkt tegelijk. Dat is heel fijn.

Wat al deze tracks gemeen hebben, is dat ze allemaal een soort futuristische sound hebben die best wel eens het geluid van 2020 zou kunnen worden. Zo futuristisch als het jaartal klinkt – vliegende auto’s, aliens, alles – zo futuristisch klinken de tracks op Seeking Thrills ook. Zoals 3FM-DJ Eva Koreman zou zeggen: de muziek heeft een goeie dosis ‘pieuw pieuw’. Maar ze hebben niet alleen dat, op dit album staan er ook genoeg invloeden uit genres die niet per se dat ‘pieuw pieuw’ hebben: zoals Mellow heel hiphop-achtig klinkt, zo zijn er op Ray Guns reggae-invloeden te horen. En over dat alles – pieuw pieuw of niet – hoor je de stem van Georgia, die, in de woorden van The Guardian, ‘very British’ is. Heel erg Brits, maar daardoor ook juist heel erg authentiek. 

Authentic futuristic

There are usually not many album releases in January, but the one that was released this month is a goodie: on January 10^th Georgia released her second album, titled Seeking Thrills. An album that sounds like the future.

I’ve heard DJ’s describe this album as ‘Robyn-like’ and I get the comparison to the ‘Dancing On My Own’-singer, but that’s not all that’s to this album. It holds very exciting collaborations, in which she shows how good she can work with others. Listen to Mellow, for example, a track with Shygirl, who usually makes dark hip hop with superfast raps. That’s not the kind of music Georgia is used to making, but that is the style you can hear in this song. It’s not weird to think that Georgia is good at collaborating, seeing as she’s played the drums for others, such as Kate Tempest.

Georgia does have her own sound too, though, and a couple of songs on this album are massive hits with her autograph on it, that you’ve probably heard on the radio at least once. Especially Never Let You Go and About Work The Dancefloor are absolute bangers. Those two tracks, alongside another single called Started Out open the album together and work like a couple of so-called ‘proppers’ (people who promote bars and clubs to potential guests) – and now that you’re here anyway, there’s no harm in staying for a while. Okay, fine, ‘Never Let You Go’ sounds a bit like a Robyn-song, but ‘About Work The Dancefloor’ has something dark to it in the chorus that doesn’t sound Robyn-like at all. This track has clear, high-pitched verses, with synthesizers that make you move immediately, and then there’s that chorus that gives this song an alternative feel that distinguishes her from the rest.

After you’ve given every single a listen – 24 Hours and Mellow have been released as single, too – finally we get to the album tracks, which are at least as good as the singles. Feel It, for example, is a very good song, because the vocals sound so distorted, the melodies are sung almost off-pitch – but not quite – and there are some lovely yells in it. ‘Feel It’ sounds both poppy and alternative at the same time. Lovely.

One thing all these tracks have in common, is that they all have this futuristic sound that might well be the sound of 2020. As futuristic as the year sounds – flying cars, aliens and all – that’s how futuristic the tracks on Seeking Thrills sound. Like Dutch radio DJ Eva Koreman would say: the music has just the right amount of ‘pew pew’. They don’t have just that, though, there are also songs on this album that are influenced by genres that don’t necessarily have this ‘pew pew’-thing: like Mellow sounds very hip hopish, reggae-influences are heard on this song called Ray Guns. And on top of all of that, pew pew or not, you hear Georgia’s voice, who is, in the words of the Guardian, ‘very British’. Extremely British, but very authentic because of that.
