Nostalgie is iets moois. Het is herinneren hoe het leven vroeger was, daar even bij stilstaan en genieten van hoeveel er is veranderd in die tijd. Ik ben misschien nog jong, maar ook ik voel die nostalgie als ik terugdenk aan vijf tot zeven jaar geleden. Nu ik even wat tijd te overbruggen heb voordat de grote releases uitkomen (Green Day, Tame Impala, noem het maar op) kijk ik weer terug op een album dat mij gevormd heeft in de puberteit. A trip down memory lane, dus. Deze keer over 5 Seconds of Summer van, jawel, 5 Seconds of Summer.
Ik weet nog heel goed hoe ik in aanraking ben gekomen met 5 Seconds of Summer. Ik zat bij een zwemclub, en met een paar meiden van die club zat ik in een WhatsApp-groepje. Eén van die meisjes was heel erg fan van One Direction en hield daar maar niet over op, terwijl ik juist een hekel had aan die groep. (Ja, ik geef het toe, het spijt me.) Ze was ook heel erg fan van 5SOS, en omdat ik er niet van uit wou gaan dat alle muziek die zij leuk vond zo slecht was als 1D, ging ik er eens naar luisteren om er mijn eerlijke mening over te vormen. En, wonder boven wonder: ik vond het nog leuk ook! Nou was dat niet zo gek, want dat was in de periode dat ik heel erg fan was van Green Day en wat nieuwe dingen in de pop punk-hoek aan het ontdekken was, en 5SOS maakte destijds nog pop punk muziek en zag er toen ook nog heel erg punk uit.
Ik luisterde dat album toen een poosje non-stop, maar nu ik er weer naar luister, vind ik het eigenlijk helemaal niet zo goed meer. Het is niet helemaal slecht, ik bedoel, de openingstrack, She Looks So Perfect, is natuurlijk een klassieker en is nog steeds heel erg sterk. Het intro, met de gang vocals, de gedempte gitaar en dan dat super catchy refrein… ja! De tekst van dit nummer is ook super 2014 pop punk, zó erg zelfs, dat Luke Cutforth samen met Patty Walters (AS IT IS) dit nummer als inspiratie heeft gebruikt om het ultieme pop punk nummer te schrijven (zie clip hieronder).
Maar dan komt de rest van het album, en dat klinkt heel erg dertien-in-een-dozijn. Van die generische pop punk liedjes met teksten over meisjes en catchy gitaar riffs. Een paar dingen vallen mij op nu ik er zes jaar later weer naar luister: Don’t Stop heeft dezelfde toonsoort als elk kerstliedje ooit, wat ervoor zorgt dat het gevoel van het nummer een beetje raar wordt; Good Girls praat vreemdgaan goed, de tekst ‘good girls are bad girls that haven’t been caught’ is een beetje raar; Heartbreak Girl gaat gewoon over een jongen die er niet tegen kan dat een meisje alleen in hem geïnteresseerd is op vriendschappelijk gebied. Fragiele mannelijkheid op zijn hoogtepunt. De rest van de nummers zijn niet opvallend, op goede noch slechte wijze, behalve Amnesia. Ik had toen ik veertien was een enorm zwak voor dat nummer en dat heb ik nog steeds. Ook dit liedje gaat over de liefde, maar dan over het einde van een relatie. Het is vooral nostalgie die ervoor zorgt dat ik kippenvel krijg bij het horen van dit nummer, maar ook het gitaartje in het intro en tijdens de coupletten. Die is zó mooi dat ik hem destijds zelf heb leren spelen.
Ik vond dit debuutalbum van 5 Seconds of Summer destijds heel goed, en ik snap best waarom. Ik had nog niet veel kennis over de muziek die eerder al gemaakt was, dit was het eerste pop punk achtige wat ik ooit hoorde, en het klinkt best redelijk. Verder was ik op mijn veertiende dól op liefdesliedjes. Ik was zo druk bezig met dat ik de liefde van mijn leven moest vinden, vrat mezelf op bij romantische komedies en kon het echt heel erg vinden dat ik single was (op mijn veertiende! Nena get over yourself). Dan hoor je een liedje als Beside You en denk je: ja! Dit voel ik! Natuurlijk ga je dan naar dit album luisteren alsof je leven ervan afhangt. Gelukkig is mijn muzieksmaak over de jaren een stuk beter geworden, al zeg ik het zelf.
Ik moet hier wel bij zeggen dat ik 5SOS niet in een negatief daglicht probeer te stellen. Ik heb geen idee wat voor muziek de band na hun eerste album heeft gemaakt, maar ik heb wel gehoord dat ze wat meer de pop kant op zijn gegaan en volgens mij gaat ze dat best goed af. Die nieuwe single ‘Teeth’ vind ik heel lekker en ik kijk er stiekem heel erg naar uit om ze deze zomer op Pinkpop te zien stralen.
5 SOS (TDML 4)
Nostalgia is something beautiful. It’s remembering how life was before, taking a moment to do so and taking in how much has changed since then. I might be young still, but I do feel that nostalgia when I think about things that happened five to seven years ago. Now that I have to bridge the gap in between now and the exciting releases that are about to come (Green Day, Tame Impala and many more), I once again look back on an album that shaped me in puberty. A trip down memory. This time about the album 5 Seconds of Summer, by, you guessed it, 5 Seconds of Summer.
I remember very well how I was introduced to 5 Seconds of Summer, 5SOS for short. I was in a swimming team, and I was in a group chat with a couple of girls from this team. One of them was a big fan of One Direction and couldn’t stop talking about them, while I absolutely hated that band. (Yes, I admit, I’m sorry.) She also really liked 5SOS, and because I didn’t want to assume that her music taste was all that bad, I decided to listen to them to form my own opinion. And, guess what, I actually liked it! Well, this wasn’t so strange, because I was a big Green Day-fan at that time and was discovering some pop punk bands, and 5SOS was still pop punk then.
I listened to that album non stop for a while, but listening to it now, I don’t love it all that much anymore. It’s not all bad, I mean, the opening track, She Looks So Perfect, is obviously a classic and is still very strong. The intro, with those gang vocals, the dimmed guitar and then that super catchy chorus… yes!! The lyrics in this song are also super 2014 pop punk, so much so, that Luke Cutforth and Patty Walters used it as inspiration to write the ultimate pop punk song (see clip below).
But then comes the rest of the album. It sounds very vanilla. It’s full of generic pop punk songs about girls and catchy guitar riffs. A couple of things caught my eye when listening to it six years later: Don’t Stop has the same key as most Christmas songs, which makes it that the vibe of the song is a bit odd; Good Girls justifies adultery, the lyric ‘good girls are bad girls that haven’t been caught’ is a bit unsettling; Heartbreak Girl is about a boy that can’t handle a girl only liking him as a friend – fragile masculinity at its finest. The rest of the songs aren’t that interesting, neither in a good or bad way, except for Amnesia. When I was fourteen I had a huge weakness for this song and I still do. This song is also about love, but it’s about the end of a relationship instead of the relationship itself. It’s mostly nostalgia that gives me goose bumps when listening to this song, but also the guitar in the intro and during the verses. It is so beautiful that I even learned to play it myself back then.
I really loved 5SOS’s debut album back when I first heard it, and I do understand why. I didn’t know that much about older music yet, and this was the first pop punkish band that I heard, and it’s fine. Furthermore, I loved love songs when I was fourteen. I was so busy with the thought that I had to find the love of my life, held back tears watching romantic comedies and felt very sorry for myself being single (at fourteen! Nena, get over yourself). Then you hear a song like Beside You and you think: yes! This is what I’m feeling! Of course you’re going to listen to this album as if your life depends on it. Luckily my taste in music has improved over the years, if I say so myself.
I do have to mention that I’m not trying to be negative about 5SOS as a band. I don’t know about the albums they released after their debut, but I have heard that they’re making pop music now, and I think they’re doing pretty good at that. Their latest single ‘Teeth’ is really good and I’m secretly very excited to see them at Pinkpop this summer.
