Grimes is terug! (English below!)

Het is even stil geweest van haar kant, maar ze is terug! De Canadese Grimes is de afgelopen tijd vooral in de aandacht geweest als de ‘goth gf’ van de man achter Tesla, Elon Musk, maar nu draait het eindelijk weer om haar muziek. Vijf jaar na de release van haar vorige album, Art Angels, is daar eindelijk de nieuwe plaat: Miss Anthropocene.

Op dit album staan twee kneiters van hits: Violence (samen met technoproducer i_o) en We Appreciate Power (feat. HANA), die beide al voordat dit album uitkwam werden platgedraaid op de radio. Dat zijn dan gelijk de twee meest radiovriendelijke nummers op deze plaat, want de rest van dit album is vrij ontoegankelijk en, plat gezegd, raar. Het geluid op Miss Anthropocene is uiteenlopend. Je hebt dus ‘Violence’, wat een voor Grimes-termen ‘normaal’ popnummer is, en ‘We Appreciate Power’, dat een keihard rocknummer is, en Delete Forever, dat een klein, lief gitaarliedje is over vrienden die ze verloren heeft aan heroïne. Daarmee heb je alle toegankelijke tracks wel gehad.

Minder toegankelijk is bijvoorbeeld de openingstrack, So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth. Dit is een lang, soundscape achtig nummer, waarin Grimes’ stem prachtig naar voren komt, al is het meeste wat ze zingt onverstaanbaar. Desondanks is dit nummer meeslepend, bloedmooi en kalmerend. Vooral de laatste minuut is prachtig, want dan valt het grote elektronische geweld weg en wordt er gefloten. Dit nummer voelt als een lange dag naar de spa. Dat gevoel verdwijnt meteen als Darkseid begint, met de heftige bas, snelle percussie en vervormde stem van 潘PAN die een donkere club-achtige vibe meegeven. Grimes zingt zelf ook, heel duister ‘Unrest is in the soul, we don’t move our bodies anymore’. De Japanse tekst, van 潘PAN dus, gaat over iemand die is gestorven door zelfmoord.

Grimes is misschien wel minder toegankelijk, maar ik vind haar, en dit album in het bijzonder, fantastisch. Al deze nummers zijn zó verschillend, maar ze doen stuk voor stuk iets met je. Ze geven je kippenvel, zorgen ervoor dat je zin krijgt om te dansen of dat de tranen je over de wangen stromen. Soms doet één nummer meerdere van die dingen, zoals 4ÆM, een track die is gemaakt voor de soundtrack van de videogame Cyberpunk 2077. Als dat nummer begint, heb je geen idee waar het naartoe zal gaan. Het begint met een hoge stem die zingt op een manier die doet denken aan Indiase liederen – Grimes heeft haar inspiratie niet voor niets gehaald uit de Bollywoodfilm Bajirao Mastani – maar in het refrein slaat het helemaal om. In het refrein komt namelijk juist die donkere techno weer naar voren, die eigenlijk het hele album overheerst.

Grimes is techno voor mensen die geen fan zijn van techno, kun je wel concluderen na het beluisteren van dit album. Sommige van deze tracks zou ik individueel nooit opzetten, maar als geheel werkt dit album heel goed doordat de zwaardere tracks worden afgewisseld met nummers die iets minder moeilijk te bevatten zijn (New Gods, My Name is Dark, You’ll miss me when I’m not around). Voor de liefhebber staan er ook nog alternatieve mixen op de plaat; iets waar ik meestal niet zo’n fan van ben, want als artiest moet je wat mij betreft gewoon kiezen voor de beste mix. Dat maakt de laatste vier tracks eigenlijk overbodig, maar voor de rest: topalbum.

Grimes is back!

It’s been a while, but she’s back! The Canadian singer Grimes has gained attention lately mostly from being Elon Musk’s – the man behind Tesla – ‘goth gf’, but finally there’s music to talk about again. Five years after the release of her latest album, Art Angels, the new LP is here: Miss Anthropocene.

There are two massive hits on this album: Violence (a collaboration with techno producer i_o) and We Appreciate Power (featuring HANA), that were both played non-stop on mainstream radio. Those are not surprisingly the two most radio friendly songs on this album, because the rest is quite inaccessible in the sense that they are less easy to like, and, plainly, quite weird. The sound of Miss Anthropocene varies. As said, there is ‘Violence’, which is a, in Grimes-terms, ‘normal’ pop song, and ‘We Appreciate Power’, which is a loud rock-like song, and Delete Forever, which is a small, cutesy guitar song about friends the singer has lost to heroin. And those are all the accessible tracks.

Less easy to listen to is the opening track for example, which is called So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth. This is a long, soundscape-like song, in which Grimes’ voice sounds utterly beautiful, although most of what she’s singing sounds like gibberish. Nevertheless this song is compelling, breath-taking and calming. Especially the last minute of this song is beautiful, because the wall of sound disappears and there is whistling. This song feels like a long day in the spa. A feeling, that disappears immediately as the next song, Darkseid, begins, with the heavy bass, quick percussion and 潘PAN’s distorted voice that give off a dark club-like vibe. Grimes herself sings too, very darkly: ‘Unrest is in the soul, we don’t move our bodies anymore’. The Japanese lyrics, written by 潘PAN, is about someone who died by suicide.

Grimes might be not as mainstream, but I think she, and this album especially, is awesome. All these songs are so different, but each and every one of them has an effect on you. They give you goose bumps, make you want to dance or make the tears stream down your face. Sometimes one song does multiple of these things, like 4ÆM, a song that was made for the soundtrack of the video game Cyberpunk 2077. When that song starts, you have no idea where it is going. It starts with a high-pitched voice that sings in a way that reminds of Indian songs – it’s no surprise Grimes took her inspiration from the Bollywood movie Bajirao Mastani – but in the chorus the mood changes completely. It’s at that point in the song where the dark techno vibe takes the stage again, which predominates the entire album.

Grimes is techno for people who don’t like techno, is my conclusion after listening to this album. Some of these tracks I would never play individually, but as a whole this is a very strong album because the heavier tracks are balanced out by songs that are a bit easier to the ear (New Gods, My Name Is Dark, You’ll miss me when I’m not around). For those interested, there are some alternative mixes on this LP, which is something I’m usually not a fan of, because I think an artist or producer should just choose the best mix there is. Because of this, the last four tracks are unnecessary, but minus those: great album.
